Amazon Expands Kuiper Satellite Constellation with SpaceX Launch
Amazon's Project Kuiper advanced its satellite internet ambitions with the successful deployment of 24 broadband satellites aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The pre-dawn launch from Florida's Space Coast marks the first of three contracted missions between the e-commerce giant and Elon Musk's aerospace company—notable given their competing interests in space-based connectivity.
The latest batch expands Kuiper's operational fleet to 78 satellites, following previous deployments via United Launch Alliance rockets. Each spacecraft will gradually ascend from their initial 465-kilometer orbit to a final operational altitude of 630 kilometers. Project engineers in Redmond confirmed all systems nominal during initial health checks.
Amazon's constellation roadmap calls for over 80 launches to deploy 3,200+ satellites, positioning the company as a key player in the emerging low-Earth orbit internet sector. The project maintains operational continuity, with all 54 satellites from earlier ULA launches reportedly functioning as intended since their July status update.
